Chapter Eighteen

It was almost lunchtime, so Dax drove a few miles out of the way to Vert Kitchen. He left Zie in the car and strode into the restaurant, reemerging with a bag bulging with sandwiches.

“You really are starving,” Zie said, eyeing the bag as he got in the car. Then, overtaken by the rich aroma seeping from the sandwiches, “Oh my goodness, that smells fantastic.”

“I’m picking up lunch for the whole office,” Dax said, “Cubans all around.”

“Did you get me one?” Zie asked.

“Of course,” Dax said, flashing her a smile. “You did feed me breakfast after all.”

Dax led Zie to the same dingy conference room as before and put the sandwiches down on the table. Zie snatched up the bag. He stared at her.

“Dax, these sandwiches are officially my hostage until you get me the form, and we can talk about what is going on here.”

“I thought we could eat first,” Dax said. Zie could practically hear his perfectly flat stomach grumble with hunger.

The three men sat around Zie and started to unwrap their sandwiches. George opened the bags of pretzels and candy and placed them in the center of the table, motioning to everyone to indicate the treats were up for grabs.

“These gentlemen wanted to join us for lunch and explanations,” Dax said. “I agreed it was a good idea since they can explain some of the scientific and technical details better than I can.”

Zie smiled at them and then looked at Dax, expectantly.

“I thought I would start with how INTERPOL became involved in this type of investigation,” Dax said. When Zie took a bite of her sandwich instead of objecting he continued. “Have you ever heard of the Bilderberg Meetings?”

Zie shook her head.

“It’s a kind of think tank between Europe and North America that was started in the 50s. They’ve met every year since then.”

“Who’s invited to this think tank?” Zie asked.

“A variety of people from different areas. Politicians, financiers, academics, and people from industry and media are invited to attend, and they talk about all kinds of world issues. About 30 years ago a trend began to come to light of increased anomalies, disappearances, reports of possession,
